Each year we send a questionnaires to all of our Beef Purchase Plan customers for their opinions and comments regarding all aspects of their experience with us, our processor, the quality of the beef, etc.  We need this data for our quality assurance program and it helps us to improve the product, the process and our herd genetics. Our personal comments are in italics.

Survey Results

We will post the individual responses (without names) as they come in, and summarize them when possible. This is obviously not a scientific study, but we also will post negative comments for your information.  Respondents will be grouped according to the animal they shared with others. Not everyone is inclined to fill in questionnaires, so this is a sampling of what we have received.

 

The questions we asked are:

Rate your experience with the meat plant

Did the beef product you received meet your expectations?

Rate the overall flavor of the beef

Rate the tenderness of the beef

Rate the packaging

Rate your overall opinion of the Angus beef

There are places for comments, advice on degree of marbling for our  future product, and what you would change in the entire process? 

 

A rating scale of 1 to 5 is used:  Excellent ( 1 )  to  Poor ( 5 ).

bulletQuestionnaire responses: Did the beef product you received meet your expectations? Excellent. Rate the flavor of the beef- Excellent. Rate the tenderness of the beef-  Excellent. All other responses were  1 (excellent) and 2. Comments: "This is the tastiest and most tender meat I have ever eaten." We found that we will probably be using and eating 1/4 of a steer next year as opposed to 1/8 we used this year" They shared a split half this year with a neighbor. Keep marbling the same.

** "Bill, the check is in the mail.  I just put it in the mail box.  We sent $50.00 for 1/4 for us and $50.00 for 1/4 for ...... the couple we split this years 1/4 with. " LT.

 

bulletAll questions were checked excellent, the highest rating.  Did the beef product you received meet your expectations? they said, "Better"  Other comments. "The meat did not taste like it had been frozen. It reminded me of beef I ate as a child. Very Tender." Keep marbling the same. P. ** This customer ordered again (twice in less than six months) from our remaining 2004 calves and brought us a new customer for another quarter. Thank you!

 

bulletQuestionnaire: All questions checked excellent. Comments: "Taste like what I remember beef tasting when I was a kid! Great Job! Add more steak :), HA! "  Customer wants to double her order but we are sold out for 2005, but we placed her on our backup list should someone have difficulty meeting their obligation. ** E.

 

bulletAll questions checked excellent except tenderness was 2 out of 5 . Comments: "Good meat that you can feed your children without the worry of hormones and sickness! This customer also prefers that stew meat be substituted for the the fajita strips. * VH

bullet"Picked up the beef this morning. The meat place looks exactly the same as I remembered it from many years ago. Everything went just great. Thanks for a most pleasant business experience." "As for quality of the beef, it ranged from excellent to excellent." All questions marked excellent, except flavor which received two check marks in the excellent column. Process: "Very easy as is. Maybe a pay on account , so when beef is ready, it is paid for." (This is very possible to do.) "Excellent product at a fair price. Meets every expectation. I like the cuts." "My daughter did not like the amount of blood retained in the package (too much)." This can happen with a frozen product after it thaws, but has not been a problem for others.  In a recent post  "The cube steak is absolutely the best I've ever had."  "I'd like to change my order from 1/4 to 1/2, if okay plz. advise and I'll send you some more money. Thanks."

       Order has been subsequently increased to three quarters!***

 

bulletAll questions were checked excellent.  "Would like to see more marbling." This is the only customer, so far, desirous of this. There is no USDA beef rating person in the State of Georgia, but our estimate along with that of our processor is that the beef delivered in 2004 would have graded out choice in most and high choice in some. We are planning for an increase in the marbling in the future with the two new bulls we have added this year. HC

 

bulletThis customer purchased one half share last year. All questions checked excellent. "no improvement needed." ..."best eating and tasting beef I have eaten." Will opt for more cubed steak and stew next time. "Excellent, keep up the excellent work."  I gave my son some meat and he thought it was the best meat he ever ate. I want to increase our order from 1/2 share to 3/4 share so we can give him a 1/4 share for Christmas. *+50 JS

bulletAll questions marked excellent. Comments: "We served hamburger at our annual Memorial Day picnic and it was a big hit!"  "The Sells made my first -time buying experience a pleasure. I like all the ground beef, actually. Nice to have it handy."

bulletQuestionnaire: All questions checked excellent. Comments: Please tell us how and where we might improve the beef purchase experience? - "No improvement needed." "I am ready to place an order for next year. We shared with my son and he is also ready to order"  Additionally, this person mentioned,  " Add Rib Roast". Our answer to this is, if one orders an entire half carcass, we can arrange whatever cuts they want, however this custom cutting is not possible on a quarter share because the other quarter share holder receives one half of the beef from the front and rear portions of the same animal!  N.

    **This customer has doubled the order for 2005 delivery to an entire cow! "Holy     Cow, that is a lot of beef!"

 

bulletQuestionnaire: All questions checked excellent and with the question Did the beef product you received meet your expectations? =  "most definitely." Rate your overall opinion of the Angus beef= "the best."  Final comment: "Excellent from start to finish." S and L C.**

bulletRecently delivered beef to this customer  "Great Steaks"   All questions answered 1 and 2, except packaging which was 3. " This is the beef I serve honored guests!" When asked how we might improve the beef purchase experience?, they said, "Other than having the purchase delivered to the house, I think the entire experience is perfect." RS "Great Product." Reordered for 2005 *
bullet"That beef is really good,  I could cut it with my fork if it were a little sharper."  Rolled his eyes when he heard we were sold out for 2005! Oh well next year!

We just began delivering cattle for our 2005 customers; some have contacted us about their experience before we even developed this year's questionnaire.

 

Calf 25

"Just to give you some feedback, the steaks I grilled for me and the wife Friday were incredible. The product is exactly what I wanted. You guys under promised and over delivered! Again, Thank you and Happy Easter."   D

"This year's reports are shadowing last year's. Beef is excellent. If this keeps up, I'll be forced (smile) to order again this year to quiet the wife and kids." *H

"Hi Elsa,


Just wanted to let you know we picked up our meat today.  Looks fantastic – we will be grilling this weekend.  We can’t wait.  The boys can go back to eating their beloved meatloaf.  They would not eat it with store bought hamburger.  So they are over the moon.  Just wanted to let you know we (the -------- family) will be purchasing ½ beef ourselves for next year. (I reserved that in the last email)
 
Please reserve ¼ for -----------.


We have, for the last several years, split the meat,  but as our family has grown we really need the ½ just for us.  They also love the meat, but can only really use ¼ themselves.

2005 Survey Results

This year we asked essentially the same questions as last, but added a question regarding "Opinion on share price?" and ask them to rate the juiciness of the beef. Results of the 2005 questionnaire are just coming in as are the orders for 2006.

This person ordered 1 share. All questions were answered excellent, however, our question,  Did the product meet your expectation?  had an additional three + marks. Also beef flavor and tenderness each had 5 additional + marks.  Other comments were "Love it!"  and "Everything about this process is wonderful. We have never had a better steak in our lives. I have told everyone and anyone how wonderful this beef is! Thank you so much for what you do! We will be placing another order very soon!" * CC

 

This person ordered 2 shares. All questions answered as excellent. Comment, "our children won't eat their beloved meat loaf if we use any other hamburger but Sell Farm." Ordered two shares for next year. * C

This person ordered an entire calf. All questions answered excellent. *JN

 

Calf 25

This person ordered 1 share. The rated the experience as excellent in 3 of 5 categories, the remaining two were rated 2 on a scale of 1-5,  with 5 being poor. As for the quality of the beef product all were answered excellent. Comment, "Excellent. I've told several people who you may hear from."  This customer doubled his order for 2006 and referred some friends to us. **TJ

Calf 43

This person bought 3 shares. The quality of the service was all excellent except he had a bad experience at the Meat Plant. I believe we have fixed that for the future! As for the quality of the beef, all was answered excellent.  Comment, " For my daughter and son, what a great gift to help out the young folks with their grocery shopping. This gift keeps giving." Ordered 3 shares for next year. *JH

This person ordered 1 share. The answers to all questions regarding the experience and the quality of the beef were excellent.  Comment, " This is our second year and we plan to be annual purchasers - delicious beef, convenient buying plan. We especially like having the ground beef on hand for a summer of grilled hamburgers!"  *CC

 

This person ordered 1 share. Rate the entire beef purchase plan, did the beef product meet your expectation? and opinion on share price were all excellent, and experience with Meat plant was given a 2 - the Meat plant forgot to give this person one box of meat - it was resolved. The quality of the beef product was given a 2 and packaging was given a 1. Comments, "More choices, less cubed meat and roasts." not signed.

 

"The Beef is Wonderful!" Customer doubled order to 2 hares for 2006 and parents also ordered one share for the first time! ** CD

 

Calf  42

In e-mail correspondence this customer made the following unsolicited comment,  "we are most pleased with the beef! "  All questions in survey were marked excellent.  Comment, "Very Pleased with entire Product!" ** GW

 

This is one of the two customers that had faulty freezer wrap paper used by our previous processor (see below*). The questions:  Did we keep you informed? Did the product meet your expectations? and Opinion on share price and flavor , tenderness and juiciness were all checked excellent. As one would expect, packaging from the previous porcessor got a poor rating! That processor and Elsa and I totally agree on this and we all apologized.  The processor refunded them the entire processing fee for their trouble!  Despite this, the customer ordered again for 2006 and sent us a friend who also purchased a quarter. * T - also sent us a new customer.

 

Calf 29

All questions regarding the beef purchase plan were checked excellent as were all questions regarding the quality of the beef. Comment, "We love buying beef from a trusted farm, where we are confident of the source and quality. The dry aged flavor is unmatched. Grocery store beef compares to yours, as grocery store tomatoes compare to home-grown tomatoes."  * SW

 

Calf 767

All questions regarding the purchase plan were checked excellent (1) and the experience with previous processor got a 2,  with 1 excellent and 5 poor. The quality of the beef were all checked 1 and packaging 2. The packaging was down graded one point, "I had several packages that had a tear in the paper. I had to rewrap. Such Great Steaks!!!" No name on questionnaire.

 

Bill, we had a couple of NY strip steaks this evening.  Boy were they ever good.  I have to be so careful with this meat.  I'd eat it every night and run out in a couple of months.  Whatever you are doing, keep it up.  As for the quality of the meat and our service all were checked excellent;  processor got a 2.5 on packages because a pack was mislabeled and some steaks were not of equal thickness *  T.

* We have had a couple packaging problems this year as you can see by some of the comments above. We have met with our previous meat plant a couple times regarding this and we collectively have developed a plan to insure that this does not occur next year. It appears that they received a faulty roll of freezer paper (part of the roll did not have wax on it) causing the problems. We forwarded all customer comments to them. The previous processor was great to work with on this issue and they will do everything to prevent the packaging problems experienced by only two people receiving a quarter from a single animal - this is out of all of 2004 and 2005's calf crop. There was also a complaint by one person about a mislabeled package and uniformity of thickness of steaks not to their liking.

Actually, we have also received a number of complements about the previous processor, here is one from an e-mail we received, "BTW, the man I talked to there the other day was very nice. It was great to deal with him. Sirloins are on the grill and the wine is ready...."  SW

Elsa and I plan to be at the meat plant to observe and monitor the packaging process until we are convinced the problems are resolved. None of the problems have resulted in spoilage, or affected the quality of the meat. The customers involved have all reordered for next year.
