Spring
The tranquility of a pasture
The Land of Happy Cows
Our large round bales of hay are stored in the barn to prevent rain from causing the hay to loose nutritional quality.
The drought has taken its toll on our pastures and hay field during the past two years. In 2007 we installed a New Zealand pod irrigation system on one hay field and a number of pastures. The cattle love it, some just enjoy the cool water spray while the calves like to take a drink now and then. With the continued drought in 2007 we are very glad we did. Our cows and calves continue to graze on lush green pastures, not hay!
Barns full of hay for the winter
Calves live and graze pasture while they also receive grain twice per day.
Hay is placed in HaySaver Hay rings when grass becomes dormant in mid-winter.
Elsa trains the Beardies to herd our sheep. Here is Tilly having a lesson.
It is difficult to get good labor these days - this is Miss Elsa cooling her heels on a hot summer day while watering plants. Shown with permission!
